I happened to see this Mazda 3 and Nissan Sentra of similar era parked next to each other. They have the same tall bubbly roofline, C-pillar, roof whip antenna, and stubby trunk. Go figure. The Nissan has a shitty twist beam rear suspension and CVT, the Mazda will invariably rust to all hell.

I was just generalizing about Mazdas and rust, but upon closer inspection of the photo...

I’d rather have the Mazda better looking and not as boring. I will never own another cvt trans car in my life.

My Altima is so fucking boring and uninspiring. If car makers continue making cars like this the “car enthusiast” as we know will no longer exist.

My fiancee had a Sentra like the one here. It was also boring. But Mazda rust problems are equally frustrating. I had a 2006 Mazdaspeed 6 and by the time I got rid of it in 2013, it had rust in the rear wheel wells, inside both rear door skins, the front strut towers, along the windshield frame, and probably some other places. Not cool.

Wow. Didn’t know about those rust issues. great cars, but rust is bad news. Aren’t the 6s they same as the Ford Fusion and such? Do they have the same rust issues?

I’d take the Mazda, rust and all, over the Nissan. The Sentra of that generation is truly one of the most hateful cars I’ve ever driven/rented.

That’s a dead ringer for my wife’s ‘06 3 we replaced in Nov. of 2014. 8 years old, and it was still rust free! She misses it. It was a great car, but we couldn't all fit in it when we had kid #2.

I looked into buying a Mazdaspeed Protage once, I think it was in 2009, I didn’t even drive it, the rust was so bad I lost all interest in the car, even though it was only 2500 bucks.

i think most of the rust issues were from the mid 2000s when mazda switched paint suppliers

The 6 and Fusion were similar platform with a longer wheelbase for the Fusion. Some 6s were built in Michigan on the same assembly line as the Fusion but the MS6 was built in Japan. I don’t know if the Fusions (or the 6s built in the US) have similar rust issues, but the first-gen 3 and last-gen Protege all have major rust problems, along with the first-gen 6 built in Japan. As far as I know it’s not really a problem with any Miatas or RX-8s.

In theory, I like Mazda as a generally sporty car company that tries to give their “regular” cars some flair, but I’m still sour from that MS6. I hated the rust and super-rattly interior.
